Fun Facts for the month of February

February 1, 1862- "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," by Julia Ward Howe, was first published in the Atlantic Monthly.


February 2, 1863- Samuel Langhorne Clemens used a different name for himself for the first time. He is better remember by that name.- Mark Twain.

February 4, 1957- Smith-Corona Manufacturing Inc. of New York began selling portable electric typewriters. The first machine weighed 19 pounds.

February 5, 1870- The first motion picture was shown to a theater audience in Philadelphia.

February 7, 1984- Space shuttle astronauts Bruce McCandless II and Robert L. Steward made the first untethered space walk.

February 8, 1922- The White House began using the radio after President Harding had it installed.

February 10, 1763- The Treaty of Paris ended the French and Indian War. In the treaty, France yielded Canada to England.

February 11, 1895- The Pennsylvania Hospital opened as the very first hospital in America.

February 13, 1965- Sixteen-year-old Peggy Fleming won the ladies senior figure skating title.

February 15, 1758- Mustard was advertised for the first time in America.

February 19, 1878- Thomas Edison patented the phonograph.

February 20, 1962- John Glenn became the first U.S. astronaut to orbit the earth.

February 21, 1885- The Washington Monument was dedicated.

February 23, 1896- Tootsie roll candies were first sold in stores.

February 24, 1968- William S. Otis received a patent for the steam shovel.

February 26, 1930- New York City installed traffic lights.

February 28, 1940- A basketball game was first televised (Fordham University vs. the University of Pittsburgh from Madison Square Garden in New York City
